Building a stronger workforce builds a stronger community.

By Nita Daniles, Senior Director of Community Engagement & Admissions Operations

For generations, opportunity in our city was not distributed equally. Redlining drew lines on maps, but its impact reached far beyond neighborhoods. It determined where families could buy homes, where wealth could be built, where businesses could grow, which schools received resources, and ultimately where dreams were allowed to flourish. Those decisions created barriers that many families are still working to overcome today. The effects of those policies did not disappear when the laws changed. They remain visible in disparities in education, income, homeownership, health outcomes, and access to opportunity. Entire generations inherited obstacles they did not create. Where wealth is generational, so are the barriers policies created.

Every day, Great Jobs KC works to dismantle those barriers and brick by brick build a stronger community.

When a first-generation student enrolls in college, we lay a brick.

When an adult earns a credential that leads to a career earning a living wage, we lay a brick.

When a young person from a historically underserved neighborhood realizes that their future can be bigger than their circumstances, we lay a brick.

We are building a new foundation where talent is no longer trapped by geography. A community where a child’s future is not determined by their ZIP code. A community where opportunity is available to every neighborhood, every family, and every person willing to work for a better life. The beautiful thing about this work is that we may never fully see the finished structure. The scholar who graduates today may become the homeowner who stabilizes a block tomorrow. The parent who earns a better wage today may raise a child who becomes a teacher, entrepreneur, doctor, engineer, or community leader tomorrow. The investment we make in one person ripples through generations.

Brick by brick, we are building a new foundation. A foundation built with equality of opportunity at its core and Scholars First as our core value.

Brick by brick, we are creating opportunities where barriers once stood.

Brick by brick, we are helping our community become a place where opportunity is not reserved for a few, but available to all.

And when future generations look back, we hope they will not remember the lines that once divided our city. They will remember the people who had the courage to erase them.
