A Message From Our CEO

Continuing Dr. King's Legacy - Great Jobs KC's Commitment to Equality and Opportunity: A Message from Earl Martin Phalen, CEO of Great Jobs KC

April 4th, 1968, the world lost a visionary leader when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the age of 39. His tireless advocacy for justice, equality, and opportunity continues to inspire generations, including us at Great Jobs KC. As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, we are reminded of the urgency and importance of our goal of helping thousands of Kansas Citians secure good- paying jobs over the next 10 years.

Dr. King’s work at the time of his murder, supporting striking sanitation workers, was rooted in the belief that economic empowerment is essential for true liberation. He understood that without economic opportunities, individuals and communities would struggle to make progress in all areas. Great Jobs KC is dedicated to carrying forward Dr. King’s vision by providing job training, career development, and mentorship programs aimed at empowering all individuals.

In the face of adversity and injustice, Dr. King remained steadfast in his commitment to nonviolent resistance and social change. His legacy challenges us to confront the inequities that persist in our society more than a half century after his death and to work relentlessly and tirelessly to dismantle them. At Great Jobs KC, we are compelled to raise awareness about the importance of equal opportunities and to advocate for social justice at colleges and universities, within the workplace, in business and in the community. By investing in the future through initiatives that promote leadership, education, and personal growth, we build on Dr. King’s belief in the potential of young minds to effect change.

As we honor Dr. King’s memory, let us recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. Together, we can continue Dr. King’s legacy and build a brighter future for all.

Our first Core Value, which is the one that drives our mission and inspires us every day, is SCHOLARS FIRST. Here's what our Scholars have to say:

Thank you for reaching out. I have completed the CDL program at Apex and have also gotten my Class A License! More then that, I have already gotten a great job offer, for a driving position at Performance Food Group! My starting entry level pay will be $83,500, and it’s all local work, Money-Friday, and I actually start orientation on Monday, April 1st. I am excited and more than anything, just grateful for this job opportunity!

My, thanks again to KC scholars and everything that you all have done for me. I will reach out if there is anything else that I need. Have a great evening!

-Shalita Durham, CDL Driver

My name is Tong, and I am graduating from the University of Kansas with dual Bachelor’s degrees. One is in Global International Studies, while the other focuses on East Asian Languages and Culture, with a concentration in Chinese Language. KC Scholars made it possible for me to attend college. During my time at the university, I was able to study abroad in Thailand and have a life-changing experience. Because of KC Scholars and other scholarships, I was able to study abroad and attend college without having to worry about finances.

What you are saying about us....

I have been a reviewer for a few years, and have donated to KC Scholars for about the same length of time. During that time I have had numerous contacts with Amy Shapiro concerning the evaluation process. She has been helpful beyond all expectations. She is one of the reasons that I continue my connection with the program. Her kindness and patience seem endless. You should be proud to have her as a representative for the organization.
