A Robotics and Maintenance Technician is a specialized professional responsible for the installation, programming, troubleshooting, and repair of automated systems and industrial robots.
In modern manufacturing and logistics, these technicians ensure that the “mechanical workforce” stays online. They sit at the intersection of several disciplines: mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer programming.
Core Responsibilities
Their workday is usually a mix of scheduled upkeep and high-pressure emergency repairs.
Preventive Maintenance (The “Health Check”)
Routine Servicing: Performing regularly scheduled tasks like lubricating joints, replacing filters, checking hydraulic fluids, and inspecting wire harnesses for wear.
System Calibrations: Ensuring the robot’s sensors and “end-effectors” (the tools at the end of the arm, like grippers or welders) are aligned perfectly.
Software Backups: Regularly saving system configurations and logic programs to ensure the plant can recover quickly from a power surge or controller failure.
Troubleshooting and Repair
Diagnostic Analysis: When a robot stops, the technician uses digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and “teach pendants” (handheld control terminals) to find the fault.
Component Replacement: Swapping out faulty motors, sensors, circuit boards, or pneumatic valves.
Root Cause Analysis: Investigating why a part failed to prevent it from happening again, which might involve suggesting a design change in how the robot moves.
Integration and Programming
Path Programming: Using “Lead-through” programming or offline software to teach the robot a new path for a different product.
PLC Interfacing: Working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to ensure the robot communicates correctly with the conveyor belts and other machines on the line.
