A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

A man with a shaved head and beard, wearing a black shirt and vest, smiles confidently with arms crossed against a blurred indoor background.

As we embark on the fall, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement for all that our team, Scholars, and partners have accomplished together. From hosting dynamic events to expanding collaborations, we continue to bring our vision of creating true opportunity in the Kansas City region to life.

One of our standout moments this month was our annual college fair, where high school Scholars had the chance to engage directly with colleges, advisors, and financial aid experts, opening doors and dismantling uncertainty about higher education.

We also hosted several hiring fairs and employer engagement events, giving Scholars firsthand access to employers, live interviews, and real career pathways.

These events wouldn’t be possible without the strong network of partners who show up alongside us. Whether local colleges and universities, training institutions, employers, or community-based organizations, each collaborator contributes to the success of our Scholars in meaningful ways.

Far beyond what we can do alone, our partners provide thought leadership resources and invest in our mission. The ecosystem of collaboration we are building is how today’s partnership creates tomorrow’s opportunities.

Follow us on social media and visit our website for announcements of upcoming opportunities and information. Share our posts to spread the word of not only the success of our Scholars but the community we are building.

Thank you,

Earl

COLLEGE FAIRS and INFORMATION SESSIONS for our scholars

Last month, we hosted our annual college fair for high school Scholars. All KC Scholars College Network partners were represented and showcased their school to 84 Scholars and families. They discussed the application process, financial aid, and student life on campus. Scholars were also able to connect with their Scholar Advocate and create an FSA ID to prepare for the FAFSA. We are grateful to the college partners for sharing information about their schools, and to the Scholars and their families for attending to deepen our understanding of the college process and options.

The High School Scholar Advocate Team hosted two packed FSA ID events for high school senior Scholars and families. Two hundred and seventeen people were busy with laptops open! Creating an FSA ID is one of the first steps to prepare for the FAFSA, which opens on October 1. Thank you to our partners, Metropolitan Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College, for hosting us!

SCHOLAR ADVOCATES SUPPORTED AMBASSADORS AT EVENTS

Kansas University

FIFTY Scholars attended our KU Ambassador event BAG IT & BRUNCH! Even more impressive, seven Ambassadors on KU’s campus attended, most staying the entire time to help set up and connect with our Scholars. The energy in the room was amazing, and it was so rewarding to watch Scholars interact and build community. They offered pastries, a coffee bar, and breakfast sandwiches to KC Scholars who also had the chance to fill a tote bag with much-needed essentials for the semester ahead, including laundry detergent, snacks, school supplies, and first aid kits. This event was a perfect example of the Ambassador Program in action: fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Kansas City Kansas Community College

KCKCC KC Scholars Ambassadors hosted a Back-to-School Breakfast to help build community and start the year off right! KC Scholars attendees enjoyed McLain’s breakfast sandwiches, grabbed some KC Scholars merchandise, and had the chance to enter a raffle and win fun prizes! Our Ambassadors did an amazing job of hosting and making everyone feel welcome!

Rockhurst University

KC Scholars Ambassadors at Rockhurst University hosted a semester essentials giveaway. KC Scholars students were invited to come by and fill a bag with items they need for the semester, including everything from school supplies, snacks, first aid kits, to fun motivational stickers. The Ambassadors took the time to be present during the event and to connect with fellow students!

UMKC

UMKC Ambassadors hosted their first event, a Slice Social at Pizza 51. Scholars were invited to play giant board games (Connect 4, Jenga, Uno), eat pizza, and enter to win raffle prizes. A huge thanks to Ambassadors Tamara, Ashley, Denisse, Mariana, and Chinecherem, who helped set up and facilitate the event, and all UMKC Ambassadors who supported in the planning process! Forty-five KC Scholars attended the event, and many took the time to hang out on the patio, get to know each other, and play games. It was such a fun event and a great way to start the semester!

OUR ALUMNI ARE MAKING CONNECTIONS AND BUILDING COMMUNITY BEYOND THEIR CAMPUSES!

We hosted our inaugural Great Jobs KC Alumni Weekend this past month. It was filled with connection, celebration, and fun!

Alumni joined us for a Virtual Trivia Night on September 19, where they tested their knowledge of Mr. Kauffman and his lasting legacy! Congrats to our 1st place winner Makaila Lorthridge and our sneak peek giveaway winner Marquita Borders!

The weekend continued with Alumni Fest on September 21, Mr. Kauffman’s birthday, making the day an especially meaningful celebration of his legacy and our growing alumni family. Alumni and their families enjoyed food trucks and yard games, danced to music from Great Jobs KC Staff & fellow Alumni DJ Leslie Ramirez, and created colorful keepsakes at the tie-dye station.  The weekend was also filled with giving back, as alumni had the opportunity to write heartfelt thank-you cards and donate non-perishable food to Catholic Charities of Kansas City- St. Joseph, adding a personal touch to the celebration.  They were able to collect 68 POUNDS of food to donate!

The first Alumni Weekend was a wonderful celebration of community, connection, and the legacy of Mr. Kauffman!

CAMPUS VISITS GIVE OUR SCHOLARS THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE OUR COLLEGE PARTNERS IN PERSON

Our high school Scholars have had incredible opportunities over the last couple of months to visit some of our amazing KC Scholars College Network partner campuses, helping them decide which one is right for them.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR PARTNERS FOR THEIR GREAT HOSPITALITY!

Avila University

Avila University welcomed our Scholars, allowing them to learn more about what makes Avila unique.

University of Saint Mary

The University of Saint Mary’s visit included a campus tour, admissions presentation, and an activity fair where Scholars could connect with majors, clubs, student/residence life, campus ministry, and a 1st-generation club.

Kansas University

Our Scholars also took a quick hop, skip, and jump over to Lawrence to check out The University of Kansas! Their tour included learning more about the admissions process and the Hawk Link Program that serves as the access point for immediate support and connection for all students on the KU Lawrence and KU Edwards campuses, as well as online.

Wichita State Univeristy

Some of our Scholars visited Wichita State University, and wow, did they get the full experience! During their visit, Scholars learned more about Shocker Nation, heard about the Shocker Career Accelerator Program offered on campus, stayed overnight in the dorms, and concluded the tour with some fun for a late-night Wichita Wind Surge game!

Kansas State University

Our Scholars traveled to Manhattan for a day of fun that included a short campus tour, followed by discussions with current students, part of student engagement and TRIO ESS, and were even offered lunch with current K-State students!

Northwest Missouri State University

Scholars had the opportunity to meet with faculty in each of their academic areas, learn more about the admissions process/scholarships, tour the campus, and meet with someone from the Financial Assistance Office. During the tour, they heard from a current student and met other families visiting in a group setting.

scholar support services

Members of our Advocate and Scholar Support Team attended the Community Action for Veterans 2025 Veterans Conference in Sioux Falls—a two-day event focused on improving services for veterans and military families, especially in rural areas.

Huge thanks to CAV Executive Director, Jill Baker, and Board Member, Janet Brekke, for the warm welcome of our team members and for championing collaboration in veteran care.

We joined professionals from across sectors—social work, healthcare, education, and nonprofits—for breakout sessions on Mental Health, Rural Challenges, and Military Families & Caregiving. The insights and connections we gained were invaluable.

The public expo featured the VA and other community partners offering resources and direct services. And a fun bonus—our own Kaydee Anderson, Scholar Advocate Special Projects, won a raffle!

Our team is excited to bring what they learned back to their work supporting those who have served our country.
