plumbing technician
What is it?
A Plumbing Technician is a skilled tradesperson responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing the systems that transport water, gas, and waste through residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
While many people think of plumbers only when a toilet overflows, the role is actually a complex mix of hydraulic engineering, blueprint reading, and high-stakes problem-solving.
Here’s a breakdown of some key responsibilities of a Plumbing Technician:
System Installation and “Rough-In”
Piping Layout: Measuring, cutting, and threading pipes using various materials like copper, PEX (flexible plastic), and PVC.
Fixture Installation: Hooking up sinks, toilets, water heaters, and dishwashers in new constructions or remodels.
Venting: Ensuring the plumbing system has proper airflow so that waste moves efficiently and sewer gases are safely vented out of the building.
Diagnostic and Repair
Leak Detection: Using specialized tools like acoustic sensors or thermal imaging cameras to find hidden leaks behind walls or under concrete slabs.
Unclogging and Scoping: Clearing major blockages and using “sewer cameras” to inspect the internal condition of underground pipes.
Water Heater Service: Repairing or replacing traditional tank heaters and modern tankless units, which involves working with both high-voltage electricity and natural gas lines.
Maintenance and Code Compliance
Pressure Testing: Using air or water pressure to ensure a system is airtight and watertight before it is put into use.
Adhering to Codes: Ensuring every repair and installation meets strict local and national safety codes to prevent water contamination or gas leaks.
Customer Education: Explaining how to prevent future issues and providing estimates for larger system upgrades (like a whole-home water filtration system).
Where They Work
Residential: Working in homes on everything from leaky faucets to full kitchen remodels.
Commercial: Maintaining the high-capacity systems in restaurants, office buildings, and shopping malls.
Industrial: Working on specialized high-pressure piping systems in factories or chemical plants.

Is it Right For You?
Here are some essential skills and qualities for success as a Plumbing Technician:
Spatial Reasoning: The ability to look at a 2D blueprint or an empty wall and visualize how pipes need to bend and slope to fit the space.
Manual Dexterity: Plumbers often work in very tight spaces (crawlspaces, under sinks) using specialized tools like pipe wrenches, torches, and crimpers.
Physical Strength: You must be able to lift heavy equipment (like a 50-gallon water heater) and navigate ladders or trenches.
Problem-Solving: When an old pipe crumbles during a “simple” repair, a technician must be able to think on their feet to find a durable solution.
