I Don’t Know What To Major In – How Do I Pick A Major That I Actually Want?
KC Scholars What should I major in? This question rattles around students’ brains for the
On November 8th, as we celebrate first-generation scholars at KC Scholars, I want to take a moment to share my own story as someone who understands the unique challenges and triumphs of being a first-generation scholar. My journey, much like yours, has been marked by determination, hard work, and the unwavering support of immigrant parents who sacrificed for a better life in Canada. Today, as the Senior Marketing and Communications Director at Great Jobs KC, I want to reflect on how my pursuit of higher education has shaped my life and how it can inspire other first-generation students to never give up.
My story begins with my parents, immigrants from India, who arrived in Canada with dreams of providing their children with better opportunities. My mom did not speak one word of English at the time, and they did not have a penny to their name. They brought with them the values of hard work, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for education. My parents instilled in me the importance of seizing educational opportunities to unlock doors to a brighter future.
As a young child, school served as my safety net. It was a gateway to hot meals, education, and amazing teachers who inspired me to do my best. As a daughter of immigrants from India who came with nothing to North America, my idea of “school” as a building grew into an understanding of “school” as a community. Education was my connection to a community outside of my family. School for me was an educational experience that was anchored on the social construction of knowledge, the development of conceptual understanding, and experiences that gave me a voice and confidence.
Being a first-generation student means charting a path into the unknown. It means being the first in your family to navigate the intricacies of college applications, financial aid, and academic challenges. It means inspiring your younger siblings to do the same and not let a zip code define you. For me, it was a journey filled with both excitement and uncertainty. I had no family history to draw from, no blueprint to follow. But what I did have was a burning desire to succeed and break barriers; that’s where the inspiration for our marketing campaign “Be Bold” for our KC Scholars Program came from.
My pursuit of higher education was not just about earning a degree but about breaking barriers and reaching heights my family had only dreamed of. Education and training opened a world of possibilities, and each class, each project, and each challenge was a step toward fulfilling my dreams.
As I honed my skills in marketing and communications, I began to understand the power of storytelling and the impact it could have on inspiring others. My education empowered me professionally and allowed me to give back to my community in ways I had never imagined.
Today, as the Senior Marketing and Communications Director at Great Jobs KC, I am privileged to help other first-generation students achieve their dreams. My journey is a testament to what can be accomplished with determination, perseverance, and the support of organizations like Great Jobs KC.
I want every first-generation scholar reading this to know your dreams are within reach. No matter how challenging the journey may seem, never give up. Your education is not just about you; it’s about breaking barriers for your family, community, and future generations.
On this special day celebrating first-generation scholars, I want to remind you that your journey is a powerful story waiting to be told. Your experiences, challenges, and triumphs are not just a reflection of your own strength but also a source of inspiration for others. Embrace your role as a trailblazer and remember that you are never alone on this path.
As we continue to support and uplift one another, we can collectively break down barriers and create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. Together, we prove that dreams are worth pursuing and education is the key to unlocking a world of opportunities.
Happy First-Generation Student Day! Let’s keep inspiring and breaking barriers, one step at a time.
